The Lookout United Kingdom
Front view of The Lookout
Cottage in England, United Kingdom
Property Details
The Lookout is a traditional Cornish cottage from which we offer self catering accommodation throughout the year. It is superbly located being adjacent to the coastal path as it exits Porthleven with magnificent views over the outer harbour, along Porthleven beach and out to sea.
We have given the cottage its name because when we are staying there we are constantly looking out at the ever changing view. It could be to watch one of the local boats chugging out to sea, the anglers on the pier, the larger ships passing by on the horizon or the surfers cresting the waves closer to the shore. Just a stone’s throw away along the coastal path towards Rinsey and Praa Sands there is a wonderful cliff top walk with great views over Mounts Bay towards Newlyn and Mousehole. Ideal for an evening stroll at the end of the day or possibly the start of a longer and more vigorous venture.
It is an easy walk past The Ship, a 17th century inn alongside the harbour, to the centre of the village. Porthleven has a working harbour, a beautiful beach and a variety of shops which will cater for most of your needs. Should you like a change from self catering there are a number of excellent restaurants and you will receive a friendly welcome from its three pubs. There is easy access to cliff walks in both directions and it is well situated if you wish to venture further afield to explore Cornwall’s renowned coastline and scenery. Over the years the cottage has been extended and refurbished but it still retains many of its original features. It now offers very comfortable accommodation to the modern holiday-maker. The ground floor accommodation consists of two double bedrooms, one with a king size bed and twin beds in the other, a bathroom with a power shower over the bath and a fully equipped kitchen to help you make the best of the self catering aspects of your holiday. Although there are excellent sea views from all of the front windows the sitting/dining room is placed on the first floor to give it commanding views out to sea and along the coast. It has an open fire which will take coal or logs.
Facilities include a colour TV, video, night storage and electric heating, electric cooker, microwave oven, refrigerator and an automatic washing machine. Bed linen is included within the rental charge. Electricity is charged by meter readings.
Local Area Details
Porthleven is an unspoilt and perfectly situated village lying between Lands End and The Lizard on the south Cornwall coast. It has been a fishing village for centuries and once was a centre for boat building.
The village is centred around a picturesque working harbour full of yachts and fishing boats and gentle activity. Its long harbour wall protects the port from the south westerlies which occasionally rage across Mounts Bay in the winter. Narrow streets climb the hills on either side offering spectacular views over the harbour and out to sea. Just outside the harbour, beyond the rocks, you are likely to see surfers skimming the waves whilst a little further out fishing craft may be seen drifting up and down. Walk along the coastal path to the East or stroll along the beach and you will find the romantic Loe Pool, where you can turn inland and enjoy beautiful walks through the Penrose Estate. Further along the cliff top you may reach Halzephron where you could stop briefly at the Inn or just continue on to Gunwalloe and Church Cove. To the west of the harbour a cliff top walk will enable you to discover the dramatic coastline towards Rinsey and to enjoy spectacular views over Mounts Bay.
Porthleven has developed a great reputation for dining out. Its fish restaurants are particularly well known but there is wide choice of food available for you to enjoy. All are within easy walking distance of the cottages as are the three pubs in the village. They also serve food and offer a friendly welcome as well as their more traditional wares. There are a variety of shops in Porthleven including a supermarket, bakeries, galleries, craft shops and a fish shop, quite sufficient for most of your needs.
The area surrounding Porthleven is well known for its fine beaches, secluded coves, wooded estuaries and rugged cliffs. There is a surprisingly varied choice of activities and places to visit - check out the links page. It is also well placed as a touring centre for the whole of the south western area of Cornwall.
The ancient market town of Helston, famous for its Flora Day festival, is just over two miles away. It has banks, shops, restaurants, pubs, a library, sports centre and a folk museum. It is sometimes referred to as "The Gateway to The Lizard". With the sea on three sides and the Helford River to the north The Lizard is almost an island - a high plateau surrounded by sea and studded by beautiful coves and beaches. It is a naturalist's delight. Further along the coast to the east lies Falmouth, St Mawes and the picturesque Roseland Peninsula. The Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan are a little bit further on.
To the west Lands End beckons but there is much to see before you reach this famous landmark. St Michael's Mount, Newlyn Harbour, Mousehole, Lamorna Cove, Porthcurno (look up the open air Minack Theatre in the links page), Sennen Cove, Zennor and St Ives to mention just a few places of interest.
For the serious shopper Penzance, Falmouth and the cathedral city of Truro are nearby. Also, as well as swimming and surfing , there are other activities such as fishing, tennis, riding and golf available locally.
