Local Area DetailsEight beautifully converted mill buildings which we call ‘The Waterhouses’ as they are literally on the River Clyde, offer a unique opportunity to stay in the heart of New Lanark World Heritage Site. This famous cotton mill village is surrounded by beautiful native woodland and is only a short walk from the famous Falls of Clyde Wildlife Reserve.
Founded in 1785, the village rose to fame as the site of radical social reforms by the former mill owner Robert Owen. New Lanark has undergone a thirty year restoration project, and former mills now house an award-winning Visitor Centre which brings to life the fascinating history of the village. Guests in the Waterhouses can enjoy a 25% discount on Visitor Centre tickets.
If you are interested in nature and the outdoors the Wildlife Reserve and the Clyde Walkway offer fantastic walking for all abilities as well as the opportunity to spot nesting Peregrine Falcons. You can enjoy spectacular views on to the falls of Bonnington Linn and Corra Linn revered by poets and artists including Wordsworth and Turner.
A stay in New Lanark also offers a great opportunity to visit Scotland’s most famous cities, with Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling only an hour’s drive away. If you feel like an after dinner drink or a delicious evening meal while staying in the village, you can make full use of the facilities in the nearby New Lanark Mill Hotel.
