Local Area DetailsBad Gastein is a great all year round destination. Set at 1000m & is part of the Ski Amade region. The network of resorts to ski at is extensive. Bad Gastein itself has 3 decent ski areas: Sport Gastein, Stubnerkogel/ /Angertal/Schlossalm & Graukogel and further down the valley Dorfgastein is also very good. Restaurants and nightlife in the winter are very good. There is good fairly chilled apre. So whilst not the scale of a St Anton or Ischgl there are various places in the town, like Silverbullet or Gatz that can easily make it tough to get up for skiing the next day. Outside of skiing there is some fantastic cross country at Sportgastein and Bochstein. There is an ice rink bowling alleys and being a spa town a pretty big spa and pool complex. And an even bigger one up the valley in Bad Hofgastein. In summer Bad Gastein is a big enough town that there is plenty to do Tennis, horse riding, golf, rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking. The main lifts run and it is possible to rent bikes from the local Intersport. If you are into mountain climbing or would like to do some extensive hiking I can put you in touch with some local guides who can show you the area. The spas stay open year round and during the summer there is a big swimming lake that one can swim in. The golf course is a decent test and as it is set in the valley between the mountains truly beautiful.
Additional InformationAbout Weather/Climate/TemperatureBad Gastein has a typical Alpine climate. Winter is cold and snowy, Jan and Feb being the coldest whilst March and April it gets a little warmer as the days get longer. Summer temperatures will range from mid 20's to low 30's but being at altitude in the mountains it is very rarely incredibly hot and there is usually a cool breeze.
About BarsThere are numerous bars in Bad Gastein. They range from fancy hotel bars to traditional alpine hut bars on the mountains to clubs in the town. Favourites for me: The youth hostel (they have a great beer from Munich on tap), Haegbloms for Apre and the Kaiserstuble. But to many to list and most are open all through summer.
About NightlifeIn winter Bad Gastein is very lively. Plenty of good restaurants and bars. And clubs that stay open to early hours. Summer is more chilled. Restaurants are open however some of the bars do close but not the ones the local frequent !
About TransportTraveling from Salzburg you have a number of options: Train (1.5hrs), Car / Winter shuttle service from airport (1hr). Munich would be an extra 90 mins drive away. Once in Bad Gastein there are regular buses and and in winter there is the Ski Bus service that can take you all over the valley to the various ski areas (It stops just up the road from my flat).
About SkiingThe Gastein Valley is one of the 5 ski areas in the Ski Amade region (the pass works for all of them). Skiing in Gastein is best appreciated by intermediate to highlevel skiers. Within the valley there are 4 distinct ski area's namely (1) Sportgastein - about a 10 minute drive/bus from bad gastein, snow sure from December to May, fairly exposed due to height but great piste skiing and awesome back country (The Heilstollen run is a good) (2) Stubnerkogel - The main lift is located in Bad Gastein by the train station. From here you can ski down to the Angertal Valley and then a lift up to the SchlossAlm. You will need multiple days skiing to explore all of these runs and there is the full combination of Black, Red, Blue runs, Tree runs, mogul runs, parks etc. The Hohe Scharte run on a good day is one of the best you'll get (longest run in the Eastern Alps I am told). (3) Graukogel - The mountain on the opposite side of Stubnerkogel and just above the flat. Always very quiet and has the best tree runs in the valley. For white out days head here and do the tree skiing on the top section. (4) Dorgastein - Extensive ski area that links up with Grossarl (next valley) its about a 15 minute drive/bus from Bad Gastein.
As mentioned the ski amade card is valid for other areas. If you're going for a week then you wont need to venture outside the Gastein valley but if you want to explore there is loads of choice (Kleinarl being a particular favourite of mine).
Mail me for more info if you like, especially if you are a beginner... I can give some good advice.

About GolfingIn summer there is an 18 hole course in the valley. The 9 closest to the town is very mature and tight (apparently was on of the first courses in Austria) with the newer nine slightly more open. Its a good test and the course is a decent length. Playing in summer with the backdrop of the mountains either side of you makes it a pretty spectacular experience. Clubhouse, driving range, pro on site... its a proper course !

Outside of the valley there are a few other courses which I haven't played so I cannot comment on those.
About FishingIt is possible to fish in summer. You do however need a license and the best bet is to probably speak to one of the locals. I have details of a ski instructor who in the summer takes clients out hiking & climbing. He is also able to organise fishing and I could pass on details if required.
About WalkingWhether you're looking to do a casual stroll, days hike or multiday trip Bad Gastein has it pretty much covered. There are extensive walking routes all very well marked. Also Bad Gastein borders the Hohe Taurn national park and there are plenty of routes in the park to hike. All over the Austrian alps there are Alm's open during the day and places to stay overnight - Bad Gastein is no different. If you're interested send me an email and I can give some advice.
About Tourist BoardThere is a good office as you come into the town. They speak English and can give good advice about whats on offer.
