BEAU SOLEIL
Beau Soleil is a private house that is our long term project and retirement home for me and my family. The house was built in 2006 and all the ground work and planting has been done with great care and with the environment in mind.
We did not originally intend to let out the house but after several of our friends and enquiries from people we decided to open up our home so others could also enjoy it and the location of its beautiful setting.
The beach is considered one of the best beaches in the world, and is fast becoming well known for its suitability for kite surfing. When the winds are good you can do a ”down winder” from Southern Palms Hotel down to Pinewood Village Resort, a distance of 12 kilometres.
The whale sharks’ northern migratory route takes them past the reef from October/November and also on their return south in February/March. The Marine parks of Wasini Island and Shimoni are also close by where you can snorkel or dive on the beautiful reef and even swim with the dolphins. Shimba Hills Game sanctuary, home of the rare Sable Antelope, and the Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary are also within easy driving distance.
For those of you who wish to venture further, the National Parks of Tsavo East and West are within a day’s travelling. Further afield are national parks such as Amboseli and the Maasai Mara.
A day trip into Mombasa and a visit to the Old Town and Fort Jesus is a must, giving an opportunity to buy all your baskets and souvenirs. A visit to the market to take in the intoxicating heady aromas of the fresh spices and the fruit and vegetables is always good. Whilst you are in town, why not go to the famous Tamarind restaurant for lunch - the Piri Piri prawns are fantastic.
Whatever you do or wherever you go, a very warm welcome will be waiting for you from the locals who are extremely friendly and hospitable people.
What the house has to offer
The house including the balconies and verandas is approx 5000 sq feet. All rooms have ceiling fans and the four main bedrooms are all en-suite with Air Conditioning and have four-poster super king size beds with mosquito nets. Two other bedrooms, one with a double bed with a ceiling and one with a three quarter size lamu day bed with ceiling fan. All the bedrooms have access directly out onto a balcony/veranda. One of the bedrooms has a private balcony. There are 3 large pedestal fans for additional cooling breeze if required.
The kitchen is fully fitted with both gas and electric rings and an electric fan oven, microwave oven, kettle, toaster and a sandwich toaster. There is a full range of plates, cups, glasses, cutlery and cooking utensils. There is a wide range of saucepans, frying pans, a wok and a griddle pan as well as baking trays. There is an LG washing machine and 2 large fridge-freezers. There is also a large walk in larder/food store and utility room.
The house is supplied with clean water from the well at the front of the property via the water tower. The house is fitted with a Xantrax electrical inverter power back up system which automatically cuts in if there is a power cut. This power back up will run the fridges and freezers, ceiling fans and up to 7 lights for about 6/7 hours.
The pool is 13.8 m in length and 7.5 m wide and 2.2 m deep end and 1.2 m in the shallow end. By the pool we have a large Banda with a makuti (thatch) roof and a large BBQ area. For our guests comfort and hygiene we have an outside shower to cool off and wash off before entering the pool. We have three large 6 ft funzi sofas and four tables with six chairs. The pool area also has six wooden sun loungers with mattresses.
The rear gate leads directly onto the beach with Pinewood Village Resort being only 200 meters down the beach. The Aqualand water sports centre, resort restaurants and beach bars are available to use for our guests.
At Beau Soleil we have 2 staff members who live on site permanently and they have their own accommodation adjacent to the house. They are excellent and completely trustworthy workers. Benjamin is the house man/cleaner. Rama is the gardener/grounds man and pool technician.
A local chef can be hired on request for Ksh 500/- per day or guests can cook for themselves.
Our driver Shabir China will pick you up from the airport and take you to the house stopping on route to change money and pick up provisions for the house if requested. The cost for this service is approximately Ksh 3,500/- each way. After you have settled in, he will also take you to the local supermarket to stock up on food and essentials with the chef, if necessary for Ksh 500/-. There is a large supermarket, Chandarana in a new shopping complex at the Baharini Plaza about 6 km away.
Safaris, dolphin trips and day trips into Mombasa can also be arranged at competitive rates through him.
The grounds are now established and the planting has been done mainly by Rama with a large amount of plants grown from seed or cuttings. The main areas of the garden around the house now have carpet grass and the other areas in the back garden have paper grass.
All windows and outside doors in the house have security grills fitted. The house is fitted with a silent security alarm that goes direct to Group 4 security who will respond to the house if activated. The house also has a siren alarm fitted so our guests can feel secure. We have never had to use either alarm.
Car hire at good rates can be requested from Glory Car Hire at the Diani Shopping plaza.
Our local contact can arrange for you to be taken out to the reef for a snorkelling trip in a traditional Arab dhow made from a dug out tree. The cost of this trip is approximately Ksh 4,000/- but can be negotiated locally with the captain of the dhow.
We have a local fisherman who will come to the house with his fresh catch of the day to sell directly to you. The Tuna, snapper and bream are all excellent along with the lobster and extra large prawns, a must for the BBQ which Benjamin will even light for you.
We intentionally do not have a TV or Hi-Fi as our guests have told us they come for peace and quiet and want to escape and unwind in the tranquillity that is Beau Soleil.
