Local Area Details

The area including the province of Grosseto is widely known as "Maremma" (from the Spanish word "marismas"-marsh). Till a century ago Maremma was a marshy and unhealty land; its natural and wonderful habitat has been preserved throughout the centuries, being still intact and unspoiled today, far from any kind of industrialisation or a wild use of cement. Maremma is a mixture of sea, pine woods, mediterranean maquis and marsh, sunny plains and mild hills: a wild landscape marked by the contrast between impenetrable maquis and tilled fields, hills where man has been working hard and harsh mountains. Your sight could wander anywhere in this district and always; you will discover picturesque and charming scenery where man has been able to live in perfect harmony with nature.
The history of Maremma begins with the Etruscans, the legendary people who dominated Etruria for seven centuries (from the Xth to the IIIrd century b. C.), the whole Tuscany and in periods of great splendour, most central Italy. Maremma was the centre of Etruscan military power thanks to the position of the "lucumonie": Vetulonia e Roselle; the small towns and the ports of Caletra, Heba, Talamone and Porto Ercole. In 280 b. C. Rome defeated the Etruscans so starting that process of decay (Barbarian invasions, Longobard domination and, in the middle age, the seignoiry of counts Aldobrandeschi; the domination of Siena and Florence), which marked the fortune of Maremma up to the establishment of the supremacy of the Lorenas. The marshes, typical of Maremma landscape, were first drained in the XVIIth century when Maremma belonged to the Granduchy of Tuscany; land drainage, carried out through centuries, made possible the repopulation of the place as well as its use for agriculture since the beginning of XXth century.
Most of the area near Grosseto extends within the Tuscan Maremma. The 130 Km of coast line with beaches, pinewoods and rocky shores are broken by numerous coves that are now wide safe tourist harbours: Punta Ala, Castiglione della Pescaia, Marina di Grosseto, Talamone, Porto Santo Stefano, Porto Ercole, Cala Galera and the harbours in the islands of Giglio and Giannutri.
The Maremma Natural Park, the lagoon of Orbetello, the lake of Burano and of Accesa, the boggy area of Diaccia Botrona as well as the numerous protected areas represent a real paradise for those who truly love Nature. The countryside, where you can still herdsmen following the herds on horseback and the hills, favourite places for brigands in the past, offer pleasant hospitality. Saturnia, Petriolo and Bagnolo di monterotondo Marittimo, well-know for their hot springs, boast modern facilities.
Maremma also boats an interesting artistic and cultural heritage, covering an extensive historical period. Many Etruscan remains, found inside the tombs, which are scattered across the whole territory, are kept in the archaeological museums of Grosseto, Massa Marittima, Vetulonia and in the archaeological areas of Sovana, Vetulonia and Roselle. The old towns Cosa and Roselle are examples of the Roman period. There are also extremely significant examples of Medieval art in this area, such as Massa Marittima which was a wealthy commune in the 13th century; Pitigliano and Sorano which boast Renaissance monuments. Both of them have their origin in the "civilization of tuff".
