Property Details

This luxury villa has been built to a high standard with top quality fittings and ceramic floor/wall tiling throughout. The 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms (1 of which is an ensuite shower room) have been fully equipped and tastefully furnished. The accommodation comfortably accommodates 6 adults and a cot/high chair can be arranged for an infant at an extra cost.

The villa is located in a beautiful position, facing extensive orange groves in 1 hectare (2.5 acres) of private, gated, land with a palm-tree lined driveway, landscaped gardens and private bowling run. Located on the outskirts of the villages Alfaix & Turre, the villa is situated close to the famed village of Mojacar and is approximately 7 kilometres from the Mojacar Playa (beach). The property is situated between the Sierra Cabrera mountains and the foothills of the Sierra Los Filabres mountain range.

From both inside and around the villa one has breathtaking uninterrupted views of extensive mountain ranges, oranges groves, foothills and countryside. There are no built-up areas in view, only quiet, serene countryside and the odd private villa! Sit under the covered front patio and relax in an easy chair with a glass of wine and enjoy the peace, tranquility and gorgeous views!

Recently built in a typically Spanish style, accommodation is on two levels with an outside covered front terrace (with seating for 6) having views over the private swimming pool. Stairs from the front terrace lead to a pathway, with water feature, followed by the private 10 x 5 metre swimming pool and large terrace with ample sunbeds and furniture to encourage outdoor living and relaxation in the sun.

Local Area Details

Local Facilities:

The local villages/small towns, on the coast and inland, include Turre, Mojacar, Bedar & Garrucha and they offer an abundance of spanish bars and restaurants serving anything from traditional Spanish cuisine (such as fish dishes and paella) right through to mushy peas and chips! Value for money and Spanish hospitality can certainly be guaranteed and, although the service may be 'laid back', the Sangria is very good for building up one's appetite! The nearby villages of Mojacar, Garrucha and Vera offer beaches and many other facilities. There are numerous supermarkets (spanish and english), banks, hospitals, doctors and dentists. On the leisure side, there are hotels, a marina, plus an array of international restaurants and varied night life plus all the things you would expect in traditional Spain.

There are numerous outdoor village/town markets held all around the area, one of the largest being held in Turre (small town), Garrucha (fishing village) on Fridays and in the large town of Vera on Saturdays.

Medical services can be found in numerous local villages and we have found that form E111, available from Post Offices in the UK, although not acceptable in some places, is very useful in this area.

Eating out is relatively inexpensive. A 3-course meal, complete with wine, can cost as little as 10 Euros, per head.

Sports - Golf, horse riding, pony trekking, tennis, squash, green bowling and go-karting are all available in the immediate area. On the 17 kilometers of beaches, which have been granted 3 blue European flags for their cleanliness, one will find wind surfing, water ski-ing, sea caneoing, wakeboarding, kneeboarding, scuba diving, jet skis and, of course, the obligatory banana and sausage rides! There is also an Aqua Park situated on the Villaricos Road, toward Vera - well worth a trip for those with children.

Mojacar:

To the left of the villa, in the distance, one can see the ancient Moorish village of Mojacar, perched on the foothills of the Sierra Cabrera mountains with its ancient whitewashed buildings clinging to the hillside.

Mojacar is only apx. 6 minutes' drive from the villa and is sandwiched between the mountains of the Sierra Cabrera and the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean. Mojacar is the most popular tourist centre in the south eastern corner of Spain. The present day town ('pueblo')has developed from one of the most ancient communities in the whole of Spain with a history which stretches back more than 4,000 years. The area has been dominated in turn by the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and Moors. The Moorish sultans were ousted 500 years ago but theirs has been the strongest influence of all - to this day the old town of Mojacar resembles a Moroccan village more than an international tourist resort.

A visit to Mojacar is well worthwhile, with its twisting labyrinth of narrow cobbled streets, old arches and domed houses, stacked one above the other. Mojacar pueblo (old town) has magnificent panoramic views overlooking the mountains, valleys and sea and is filled with superb restaurants, small privately owned boutiques, charming squares and intimate bars. Only 2Km away, down at the seafront, you are in another world of international restaurants and bars offering a wide variety of Spanish and International cuisine. Here all residential buildings are restricted to 2 storeys and hotels to 3 - you can see why the village is aptly named and famous throughout Spain as 'El Rincon del Embrujo, "The Corner of Enchantment". The result is a lively resort which offers plenty of activities for the foreign holidaymaker whilst retaining its traditional Spanish charm and character.

One of Mojacar's greatest claims to fame is the hotly disputed assertion that Walt Disney was born here. The story goes that he was the illegitimate son of a beautiful local washerwoman who fled to America to escape the disgrace and to seek her fortune. Unable to provide for him, she gave him up for adoption to Flora and Elias Disney of Chicago. The tale can neither be proved nor disproved as his birth registration record has never been found - either in Chicago or in Mojacar (where all records were destroyed during the Spanish Civil War). The Arabs named this place "Munsaqar" and defended it against the Christian armies for hundreds of years until King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella reclaimed it in the late 15th century. But the legacy of the Arab invaders remains in the old Moorish fortress and the architecture which makes the foreign visitor feel he or she has arrived on the African continent. Each summer the locals honour their Arab ancestors with a spectacular 'Moors and Christians' fiesta, complete with extravagant costumes, Arab sabres and mock street battles (throughout which the Spanish male protagonists puff somewhat incongruously on huge cigars!)

Surrounding Areas:

The countryside around Turre/Mojacar is what some people would call 'Real Spain' and comes under the province of Almeria, taking it's name from the city of the same name. The towns and villages are Spanish in character and you are likely to see donkeys bringing sugar cane in from the fields and herdsmen walking their goats over the mountains. Local wildlife includes wild boar, genet, fox and weasel.

There are local markets catering for locals but there are also markets, which have sections and goods specifically for tourists.

The Mojacar area is Spain as it used to be; small villages in the hills (some with a small bar for drinks and tapas), orange, lemon, almond/olive groves and goatherds. This is a slow way of life that is disappearing.

The area is also famed for its troglodyte villages where cave dwellers have fashioned their extraordinary homes out of the soft rock. Take a day trip to Gaudix (apx. 1 hr 30 minutes by car). Not only is it an interesting old town, with hot springs for swimming, but you will also be able to see a complete 'housing estate' of inhabited caves. Just simply follow the 'cuevas' signs on entry into Gaudix town and it's signposted. You will see the smart front doors in the hillside and the little chimneys puffing smoke out of the hilltops You half expect Bilbo Baggins to invite you in for tea! As well as the modern-day 'troglodyte' villages, there are also prehistoric caves at Sorbas, as well as Roman and Moorish remains. If you wish to visit Sorbas it's well worth booking ahead for an English speaking guide (for organised trips ring Ferri Tours on 00 34 950 47 23 33 (from abroad) or 950 47 23 33 (from Spain).

Tourist centres have built up on the eastern coast of the province at Mojacar and on the southern coast, west of the city, at Aguadulce, Roquetas de Mar and Almerimar. In these areas you'll find good beaches, marinas, international restaurants, hotels and sports centres. At the eastern corner of the province (at the south east tip of the Spanish mainland) lies the Cabo del Gato-Nijar nature reserve with its desert landscape and rugged coastline peppered with small coves, only accessible on foot. This is a sparsely populated and desolate area but it has its attractions for hikers, nature lovers, bird watchers and scuba divers.

Approximately 45 minutes inland near the village of Tabernas you can visit the "badlands of Almeria" - Europe's only desert region. Visit "Mini Hollywood", where numerous Italian and American films were shot including "A Fistful of Dollars" (Clint Eastwood) and part of the Peter O'Toole epic movie "Lawrence of Arabia". Wild West shows (including a bank robbery, hanging and shoot-outs) are put on daily (in high season) at the 3 'old' film-sets. "Mini Hollywood" has also recently opened a Safari Park.

There are opportunities for sightseeing both in the immediate area and further afield. There are spectacular views (and driving) on the roads from Mojacar to Carboneras and beyond to the mountain coastline of Cabo de Gata, offering secluded beaches and coves. In the other direction, towards Villaricos and beyond, there are numerous small coves and inlets with small beaches.

For those of you who don't mind travelling for apx 2 hours and want a complete full day out or overnight stay, there is the magnificent Alhambra, situated in Granada. The Alhambra was a Palace, citadel, fortress and home of the Nasrid sultans, high government officials, servants of the court and elite soldiers from the 13th to 15th century. Today the Monument is divided into four main areas; the palaces, the military area (Alcazaba) the city (Medina) and the agricultural estate. There are also further buildings of different periods, such as the Renaissance-style Charles V palace, housing the Alhambra Museum and Museum of Fine Arts. For further information take a look at the web site http://www.alhambra-patronato.es Entrance tickets should be pre-booked and can be arranged by you either by internet on www.alhambratickets.com or by telephoning 00 34 91 537 91 78 (from abroad) or 902 22 44 60 (whilst in Spain).

If visiting the Alhambra, you can also purchase a 'Granada Tourist Coupon' from the 'Alhambra and Generalife' ticket office which will give you a discount on entry to the most important Monuments and Museums in the city!

This area of Spain is the ideal destination for those of you who are seeking a peaceful holiday but is not suitable for those who like organised activities and a wide variety of nightlife. The major nearby towns provide the usual necessary amenities, whilst the coastal area of Mojacar Playa boasts a nightlife that would satisfy most.

Almeria Province:

Turre/Mojacar come under the Almeria Province. This province has escaped mass tourism and the high rise buildings which are now evident on the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol. Th Province is located in the South East corner of Spain, bordering the provinces of Granada and Alicante. Unlike other popular holiday resorts it is still relatively uncommercialised and it is only in the last few years that touristic development has taken place. Almeria Province is one of the last refuges of unspoiled coastline and has retained the old-world charm and atmosphere of traditional Spain!

The city of Almeria is located on the Costa Almeria (coast) at the eastern edge of Andalucia. This is probably the least known of all the Spanish costas although tourism is a growing industry here with holiday resorts developing to the east and west of the city. The coastline has a good variety of beaches but the hinterland has a barren, almost lunar landscape which put the province of Almeria on the world stage in the 1960s when Italian movie-makers decided it was the ideal location for hundreds of "spaghetti westerns".

The Almeria province has been colonised by all the great Mediterranean peoples from the Phoenicians, the Carthagineans and the Romans to the Moors, who were in occupation for some 800 years, creating a wealth of culture and knowledge and leaving relics and ruins which are among the wonders of the world. The word 'Almeria' comes from a moorish word, meaning 'mirror of the sea', and was an important settlement a hundred years before the building of the Alhambra in Granada and the capitol of the Moorish Kingdom.

The coast is the driest and warmest in Spain (most probably the best in mainland Europe), with an average rainfall of 11" and an average annual sunshine of 320 days. The sea temperature is warmer in winter than its air temperature, making swimming an all-year-round, enjoyable, activity. The overall annual average temperature exceeds 18oC, with the winter temperature rarely falling below 13oC.

Some consider the Costa Almeria as the cradle of Spain, due to the number of prehistoric finds - evidence of the occupation by various civilizations, such as the Romans, Greeks and Arabs.

The Almerian interior offers many geographical variations for exploration - coastal coves and inland desert areas. There are also picturesque national parks including the Santa Maria park in the north and the Sierra Nevada mountains natural park in the west of the province that it shares with neighbouring Granada.
