About Scenery/Beauty Spots
On most tours you will travel in an air conditioned car or mini bus and if you wish, you can take the local Dolmus (shuttle service in modern air conditioned minibuses). Sun, Sea and Beach If you want a self catering villa with sun, sea and beach holiday, a cultural or a fun activity holiday, you will find a wide variety of things to do from Kalkan, Turkey. You can be collected from your vaction holiday villa to be taken on one of the many guided day trips available to all the nearby , the many beaches along the coast or a trip to the nearby towns of Kas and Fethiye. Kalkan itself has a village market each Thursday selling a range of goods, souvenirs and locally grown produce and the famed spices of Asia Minor within a 5 minute walk from the villa. For the water sports enthusiasts, there are trips to Patara Beach for parascending or Saklikent Gorge for a days canoeing only 20 minutes drive from the villas. Scuba Diving Kalkan has one of the best Dive Centres on this part of the Turquoise coast for beginners wanting a days taster to experienced scuba divers wanting new seafloors to explore. Kalkan Dive Centre offers a one day dive costing around £25 to a 3 day dive for around £70. They even do night dives for around £20. Operating in Kalkan Harbour only 10 minutes from the holiday villas. See 'Island Diving' site for informatiom Day Trips Some of the day trips are very good value but you can always hire a car and driver for very little compared to many holiday destinations. With the drivers assistance you can arrange your own personalised day out and even add a relaxing massage in an authentic Turkish bath (Hamam). An experience you will talk about for a long time. A few of the sites to visit with the local tour operators are-: Kekova and Simena, Lycia's famous sunken city and Roman castle ruins, Xanthos which was the capital city of Lycia and which has recently revealed complete mosaic floors, Patara which is famous for its beautiful 18 km sandy beach and it's nearby ruins, Pinara with it's beautiful Lycia ruins, Tlos- another great Lycian city and home of Pegasus, the famous rock tombs of Myra and the church of St. Nicholas and the three temples of the sacred Lycian cult centre or Letoon. Then return in the evening to your own barbeque on the roof terrace of your own self catering holiday villa. Hiking Trips If you love hiking then why not take a hiking tour and experience the stunning beauty of the Taurus Mountains and their plateaus. There are daily tours from Kalkan to nearby villages in the mountains or some trips with overnight stays futher away from Kalkan. You even get provided with a tasty turkish meal at lunchtime and afternoon 'Tea' Turkish style. a trip can be booked from the Harbour in Kalkan only ten minutes walk from your holiday villa. Gulet and Yacht Trips Enjoy a three-day, two-night Gulet or skippered sailing yacht trip along the beautiful Lycian coast from Kalkan to Fethiye and nearby islands or Kekova and beyond. There are also one day yacht trips to visit the Greek island of Meis. You can be collected from your vacation Villa. About Beaches
Kalkan has a lovely beach made up of round white pebbles. It is clean and easily accesible from Jasmine and Airhouse Villas. Patara beach is about 20 minutes drive/taxi and is 18klms of fine clean sand. Kaputas beach is about ten minutes along the coast and is at the point of a gorge running into the sea. It is accessible by boat or by many steps leading down from the road.
About Airport Information
Dalaman is the nearest Airport being 1:30hrs drive along beautiful scenery and small secluded bays. Transfers in a car about £50 each way. Antalya is about 4 hrs drive. Transfers in a car about £80 each way Airport transfers and car hire can be arranged through the owners of Jasmine or Airhouse Villas. Dont forget that a £10 English note is required at the airport for your visa.

Boat trips and some sailing on gulets can be arranged from the harbour or in one of the many agents around Kalkan.
About Diving
There are a number if good diving centres around the harbour and Island divers is run by an English man named Nick. We took a try dive with him and it was great fun.
About The Gay Scene
Kalkan and the Turkish people generally are very welcoming and accept other ways of life and religions. Gays and lesbians are not treated any differently than any other tourist and there are no particular bars or restaurants catering exclusively for them. There is a small number of gays living in Kalkan all year round.

About Weather/Climate/Temperature
One can almost guarantee long hot sunny days in the season. It hardly ever rains until the winter months. May and October are particularily nice if you dont want the high heat of July and August.
About Bars
There are a number of bars, some with music. The ones on the harbour charge more for drinks.
About Nightlife
There are a couple of popular bars which have dance floors and are open until the last guest leaves in the early hours. After this one can eat at the 'Soup Kitchen' which is open all through the night and serves a range of local village meals and snacks.
About Transport
Taxis are plentiful and cheap. The local Dolmus' are modern airconditioned minibuses which run between the towns along the coast. They are inexpensive and one can get on and off where you will. Modern luxury coaches travel along the coast and even to Istanbul - a 16 hour journey!
About Children Activities
There is plenty for the children to enjoy. The beach and the boat trips being great favourites. Suleyman Donkey tours are another. Having a private pool with Jasmine or Airhouse Villas is another delight for the children. Canoeing on Saklikent Gorge or horse riding are some of the ways to entertain the kids and the parents too.
About Family Activities
Boat trips are a great way for enjoying a family day. The parents can relax and sunbathe whiist the children can swim in secluded bays, snorkeling and eating to their hearts content.
About Local Restaurants
Avalon restaurant - full of ambience and style, is the most sophisticated restaurant in Kalkan. The exceptional standard of food and service, the professionalism of the staff and the fabulous venue all combine to make a meal at Avalon a wonderfully memorable event. Ideal for romantic intimate nights out, the creative menu and wine list makes this a must for the discerning diner. Bezigans Kitchen - This small family run restaurant serves traditional, unpretensious Turkish meals for an economical price. The staff are very friendly and helpful and always aim to please. Start with the delicious homemade lentil or chicken soup followed by a variety of casseroles, chicken and potato stew, meat stew, green bean casserole, stuffed aubergines, tasty rice, chick peas and beans are all excellent choices served with bread and salad or the tasty kebabs. The owner's wife and sister-in-law make bread and pancakes in the restaurant in a traditional brick oven. SHANGHAI Restaurant serves Chinese, Indian and Mexican and is opposite Kartin Supermarket in Kalkan. John and Pattia give a warm welcome and the food is of good quality and at a reasonable cost. Certainly worth a visit! Try the Fried Bananas with deep fried honey walnuts for desert.....Mmmmmmm.......! There are many superb rooftop restaurants and small cafes that you wont fail to find a special one for yourself. They serve a wide range of foods and styles including traditional Turkish to 'egg and chips'.
About Driving
Driving is fairly easy in and around Kalkan although some roads are not made up. The main road running along the coast is a good dual carriageway for most of the way from Dalaman to Kalkan. There is little traffic compared to European roads. Turkish drivers will sound their horn as they overtake other cars or pass pedestrians to alert you. This is a courtesy and not done in anger. A small 'toot' is all that is needed. Please Note: in Turkey, if you have any type of accident, however small, even just bumping a rock, DO NOT MOVE VEHICLE - only to safety. You must call the Gendarme to write a report and take photos for any insurance claim by the Car hire company. Also you need to report it to the Car hire company within 48 hrs for them to make a claim. Failure to do so may incur repairs at your cost!
About Walking
The great Lycian way passes behind Kalkan and along to the ancient city of Patara. Not for the faint hearted.
About History
An amazing coastline journey brings you into this charming town, once occupied by the Ottomans. Kalkan is full of character with a network of amazing cobble stone alleys winding down to the bay. With it's carved Ottoman balconies draped with Bougainvillea and a reputation for having the highest number of restaurants and bars per inhabitant, this all guarantees that every visitor to Kalkan is submerged in turkish culture and world famous turkish hospitality. Kalkan has undergone many changes and today enjoys a rich history and cultural heritage which is clearly reflected in the traditional buildings to be seen in the heart of the community. The old Kalkan buildings are usually two storeys high but in some cases, where the road is particularly steep, there may be a mezzanine. The windows and the balconies of the upper floors face towards the sea to take advantage of the cooling breeze. Such beautiful character buildings are typical within this unique romantic village which will make your holiday in Turkey a memory that will live with you for many years. Kalkan is also an ideal base for exploring Turkey’s impressive . The ancient ruins of Xanthos, once the greatest capital city of Lycia, with its Lycian tombs, Roman theatre and newly discovered complete mosaic floors is one of the most beautiful of Lycia's ancient cities. Taking a day trip on a glass bottomed Gulet to view the sunken city of Kekova and climb to the ancient remains of a Roman castle on Simena is an awesome experience. There are a further 25 fascinating archaeological sites within two hours from Kalkan. The famous beach of Patara, birthplace of Saint Nicholas (Santa Claus) and home to ancient ruins is less than 25 minutes away. The impressive beach of Patara is16 km of pure white sand that has formed dunes over the ruins of ancient Patara and just 20 minutes away by dolmus which is a shared air conditioned mini bus. The beach is closed in the evening to allow the protected Loggerhead turtles some privacy to breed. These can all be visited from our holiday villas to rent in Kalkan Turkey.
About Shopping
Kartins Supermarket - This clean, bright new supermarket stocks many European products. You will find the shelves filled with many familiar items. Baby foods and other baby items can be bought here and you will recognise many familiar brands. After eating in one of the many restaurants, you can select all your shopping and have it delivered free to your holiday villa almost immediately and you with it! The other supermarkets will also deliver. Local produce is fresh and very inexpensive. Cigarettes are about a quarter of the English prices and about the same as in the Duty Free shops at UK airports. There are English speaking staff and they do take GBP currency. Kartin's Supermarket is open from early morning till late in the evening.
