Local Area Details

ARRECIFE: The political and commercial capital of the island. Banks, restaurants, shops, bars and cafés are found along the seaside promenade, in the pedestrian street Calle Leon y Castilla and in calle José Antonio.
ARRIETA: A delightful fishing village at the north end of the island. Excellent fish restaurants abound.

TAHICHE: Cesar Manrique Foundation – Home of the world famous artist, Cesar Manrique. Built on the site of five volcanic bubbles.

GUATIZA: Cactus Gardens – Designed by Cesar Manrique, these gardens contain over I420 different species of cacti. This area is home to the cochineal beetle whose cultivation provides a red dye.

EL GOLFO: The black beach and deep green lagoon formed by a volcanic crater blown sideways into the sea make a spectacular sight. Numerous restaurants that provide excellent, fresh seafood grace this village.

FAMARA: This village and its beach lie on the west coast. Although swimming is not recommended here due to its strong currents, both wind surfing and surfboarding are popular here. The village has many excellent fish restaurants with striking views of the cliffs, ocean and the island of La Graciosa.

HARIA: This village is in a valley set deep in the mountains. This valley is known as the "Valley of a Thousand Palms" and is the greenest place on the island. It is definitely a change of scenery and is well provided with a number of good restaurants. The reason there are so many palms here is because there was once a tradition that when a daughter was born one palm was planted and if a son were born two palms were planted.

LA GERIA: This is the wine-growing region of Lanzarote, the largest in the Canaries. One of its wines "malvasia" is even mentioned by Shakespeare. Visit the "bodegas" (wine cellars) to taste the wines and see the unique way the vines are cultivated.

LA GRACIOSA: This is one of the smallest islands in the Canaries and is a wild life reserve. The island, which has a number of fresh fish restaurants, is generally less than 30 minutes from the village of Orzola by passenger ferry.

LOS JAMEOS DEL AGUA: A series of caverns and open roofed caves created by the lava flow of a prehistoric eruption. A natural lagoon, which is connected to the sea underground, gave the grotto its name. Here you can see small, white crabs; which are completely blind. These albino shellfish, about 3cm in length, are designed to live deep in the sea - about 1000m down; it is therefore unclear why their presence should be encountered here. Cesar Manrique used his artistic skills to transform some areas of the lava bubbles into a concert hall with incredible natural acoustics and also a restaurant and night club.

MIRADOR DEL RIO: Another of Cesar Manrique’s creations. The view toward the island of La Graciosa from this enclosed café/bar lookout point, perched on the cliff hundreds of meters above the ocean, is nothing less than spectacular.

MONUMENTO EL CAMPESINO: Yet another of Cesar Manrique’s creations. Located in the geographical centre of the island, this monument is dedicated to the farm worker and his animals. At the monument there is a restaurant, museum and shop.

PAPAGAYO: Located at the extreme south of the island just north of the town of Playa Blanca. This beach is noted for its wide sandy shores and sparkling crystal waters. The road is unpaved and there is just one bar.

PLAYA BLANCA: Once a sleepy fishing village, it is now a major resort area with a scenic seafront walk, excellent restaurants of various cuisines and bars - all with views to the sea. Ferries for Fuerteventura leave from here.

PUERTO CALERO: A beautiful Marina, with shops and Restaurants to the South of Puerto del Carmen.

PUERTO DEL CARMEN: This is the main tourist area of Lanzarote. Once a small fishing village it now has one casino, 12 kilometres of beaches, shops, bars and restaurants in profusion.

TIMANFAYA "The Fire Mountain": - The 51 square kilometres of lava fields and volcanic craters have been made a national park. On the top of one of the volcanoes is a restaurant where the meals are cooked on the heat emanating from its interior. An air -conditioned bus takes visitors on a short, multi-lingual tour of the park.

TEGUISE: The former capital of the island has many beautiful buildings dating from the colonial period of Spain’s history; the church of San Miguel, the Castle of Guanapay and the Palacio Spinola number among them. On Sunday the town hosts a lively market.

YAIZA: This town, lying in the interior of the island, was winner of a contest for the most beautiful village in the Canaries. There are a number of traditional cafes and restaurants as well as a number of architecturally appealing buildings.

ORZOLA: A quaint fishing village is located at the northern most tip of the island at the end of a scenic drive. This is where the ferry departs twice daily for the island of La Graciosa and where the famous fish restaurant "Charco Viejo" is located.
