Local Area Details

Xàbia (Spanish Jávea) is a coastal town located in the comarca of La Marina Alta, in the province of Alicante, Spain, by the Mediterranean Sea.

Situated behind a wide fine beach and sheltered between two large rocky headlands, the town has become a very popular small seaside resort and market town. A mile or so from the public beach there is a working fishing port and a new harbour. Flat agricultural land stretches for miles behind the town, cut by small streams and used primarily for growing citrus & olive trees.
Javea has good road connections to regional capitals and both Alicante and Valencia airports are just over an hour's drive away. There are regular and direct coach links to both Alicante and Valencia as well as a daily service to Madrid. The nearest rail station is at Gata de Gorgos, about 10km inland, with a regular service to Alicante.

The town can be split into three distinct areas: the old town, the port and the Arenal.

Old Quarter The old town was once a walled town to protect the inhabitants from marauding pirates that once sailed this coast and there is still evidence of the presence of these fortifications; stone crosses mark the original gates in three locations. In the centre of town, mostly built in original Tosca stone hewn from the rocky shore, sits the impressive Church of Sant Bartolomé which dates back to the late 14th Century but there is evidence that some of the structure may date back a further 300 years. The church suffered extensive damage during the Spanish Civil War and its southern and western walls remain pockmarked with bullet and shell holes. It was listed as a National Historic and Artistic Monument in 1931 and remains a stunning centrepiece to Xàbia's 'old quarter'.

The modern municipal market sits opposite on the northern side of the church and stands on the site of the convent of "Agustinas Descalzas" (the barefoot Augustine nuns). Built in 1946, the market retains the style of the area and is a popular place with locals and tourists for fresh fruit and vegetables, locally-caught fish, and succulent meat from the local area.

There is also a historical and etnographical museum ("Museo Historico y Etnografico Municipal J.B. Soler Blasco Javea") and an established art gallery in the old town, Atelier 1 with regular art exhibitions are held in the gallery at the town's library.

Hidden within its narrow streets are a wide range of excellent bars and restaurants in which one can sample both local and international cuisine.

Puerto - Aduanas del Mar The bustling port is a firm favourite with tourists with its fantastic seafood restaurants, safe gravel beach and impressive marina. Whilst the history of the harbour stretches back to the 15th Century, the first jetty was built in 1871 and it became an important gateway for the export of raisins. The raisin trade collapsed at the end of the 19th Century and the settlement became a mere fishing harbour. The modern harbour was built in the 1950s and 1960s and is regarded as one of the busiest fishing ports on the Costa Blanca. The nautical club has been in the central area of the harbour since 1963. The landmark is the church of Nuestra Señora del Loreto, built in 1967 to represent the heart and feelings of Xàbia's fishing quarter. Its shape is that of an oval boat keel and it was built to resemble a fishing vessel bursting through the waves.

Arenal The busy beach area is a blue flag beach of wide white sand flanked by a promenade of shops, bars and restaurants to suit all tastes and wallets. During the summer evenings there are a number of stalls selling handmade crafts. Many of the bars offer live music and one can party away until the very early hours. Many accomplished 'sand artists' work along the Arenal beach during the summer months as well as a wide range of street entertainers. But history can be found amongst the sunbeds and bars. The 'Punta del Arenal' behind the Parador Nacional Hotel was once an important Roman settlement where the fish sauce garum was produced and despatched all over the Roman world. On the other end of the small bay once stood the Fontana Castle, built in 1424 and destroyed by the English during the Peninsular War in the early 19th Century; the ruins of the castle now lie under modern apartment buildings but some of the castle's surviving cannons sit outside the Church of Sant Bartolomé in the old town.

The Montgó National Park was declared on 16th March 1987. It covers approximately 2,150 hectares situated between Xàbia and its neighbour Dénia. Standing at 753m high (2,471ft), the summit of Montgó is the second highest peak so close to the sea in the whole of the Mediterranean; on a clear day the island of Ibiza can be seen perfectly on the far horizon. The park has numerous archaelogical remains dating back several thousands of years as well as flora which includes a large number of Iberian endemic plants. A range of abandoned windmills crown La Plana, most of which date back to the 18th Century.

The town's market day is on Thursdays, except when there is a local or national holiday. There are also three main fiestas: the Fogueres de San Juan (June) are pagan in origin, commemorating the arrival of the summer solstice, and are widespread throughout the Valencian Community, the Moros y Cristianos (July) parades, noisy and colourful, take place in the port area and celebrate the defeat of the Moors by Christian forces in the 13th Century, and the Nuestra Señora de Loreto (September) with the bull-running on the harbour walls and a magnificent firework display.

A large range of sports and hobby activities are catered for in the area, including cycling, diving, fishing, golf, horse-riding, mountain-biking, photography, sailing, trekking; there are many shops & rental centres that serve these pursuits.

The town centre of Xàbia, on the Costa Blanca, is located a short distance from the seafront, nestling under the imposing gaze of Montgo; massif. The harbour is located under a cliff at the end of the broad coastal plain, and offers a full range of modern tourist services, accommodation and clean, transparent waters, with beaches that alternate with rocky coves all along this special part of the Costa Blanca, as we can see in this webcam at one of the cities most popular beaches. The town has a maze of streets that run down from the fortified church of St Bartholomew, with lots of charming little shops and houses adorned with local stone.

As Jávea is a growing town, it boasts a wide and varied offer of leisure activities. There are many cafeterias and terrace bars on the promenade and in the Arenal, as well as pubs, discos, skating rinks, go-kart circuits, cinemas, drive-in cinemas, etc.

The Town Council offers a varied programme of cultural interest: courses, conferences, musical shows, etc.

The range of cultural activities is completed by various organisations and bodies: Municipal Painting School: Jávea-Xàbia Cultural Atheneum: Youth Office: School of Music and Dance: Jávea Musical Artistic Centre: Municipal Library: "Soler Blasco" Archaeological and Ethnographical Museum.

Many sports can be practised in Jávea, particularly those associated with the sea and the mountain.

The Sea

Jávea-Xàbia’s coast is varied and covers a length of 25 km with splendid, perfectly sheer cliffs and quiet waters in which to enjoy the Mediterranean Sea.

From North to South are the following beaches: El Pope, Benissero, El Arenal, La Barraca or Portichol, Ambolo or La Granadella, which alternate with many coves and rocky areas such as Montañar, La Caleta or Cala Sardinera.
There are also two uninhabited islands: Portitxol, to the South of the Cabo de la Nao, and Isla del Descubridor.
There are several caves in the cliffs at sea level, most noteworthy being Cova Tallada, Cova dels Coloms and Cova dels Orguens.

The quiet waters are ideal for fishing, both in the rocky areas and in the coves and on the breakwater of the port. Fishing enthusiasts traditionally use special places for their fishing, which they call “pesquera.” These are sometimes situated in the most unlikely locations, even on occasion hanging from the cliffs themselves, when long ladders and ropes are used to descend the cliffs to reach them.
