ARRONE - Terni, Italy Vacation House
This is a small stone-built house, over 200 years old, situated on a hillside about 3km from the picturesque village of Arrone. It stands in a small square, part of a community of 5 families , all Italian , except us . It consists of 2 floors and a mezzanine connected by a spiral staircase. There are 2 comfortable double bedrooms - one has an en-suite shower and small terrace. There is a large sitting room and mezzanine with lots of books, music centre, TV and DVD player. Downstairs there is a well equipped kitchen/dining room which leads out onto a large terrace , screened by trees overlooking the valley , perfect for eating outside or just lazing around and sunbathing. For colder weather there is a large wood burning fireplace, central heating and constant hot water . Linen and towels are provided. The house is located in the Valnerina National Park, surrounded by rugged mountains and woods home to wild boars and black truffles . This region is famous for its unspoilt hilltop villages and towns which provide a rare continuity of tradition and culture. Umbria has been home to more saints than any other part of Italy - Valentine, Benedict, Rita, Francis for example, which are celebrated by the wonderful churches and beautiful artworks in many local towns easily reached from here as well as the more ancient Roman and Etruscan sites of Carsulae and Tarquinia etc . Arrone is the nearest village with food shops, banks, PO etc and there are several excellent swimming pools nearby as well as other sports facilities. The provincial capital of Terni is 14 km away with easy rail links to Rome (1hour) and Florence. The bizarre gardens of Bomarzo are within easy distance along with the Villa Lante and a visit to the fantastic fountains of the Villa d'Este in Tivoli can be combined with a visit to the impressive remains of Hadrian's villa. Ther are thermal springs and spa facilities in Viterbo and a lovely outside mineral pool in Orte, much loved by the local people. Every summer even the smallest village has its own festa with processions, displays of medieval archery , jousting , horse racing - all including music and dancing , eating and drinking wine and often ending with spectacular fireworks. There is a terrific trattoria within walking distance of the house which serves great food (no menu) all sourced locally and home made ( pasta etc ) at very reasonable prices . There are lots of really wonderful places to eat , the food is of the region , very fresh, simple and delicious !!! The neighbours are very friendly and hospitable , they do not speak any english but are more than happy to help in any way .
