Holiday with the natives not the tourists. This village is not the stereotyped image of Spain. In fact it is Catalonia where Spanish is the second language to Catalan. Nowadays the city is known by its Catalan name of Girona but you may still see a few old signs with the Spanish spelling of Gerona.
The area is rich and lush with dairy herds and cattle and an abundance of crops from sunflowers and corn to apple, pear and vineyards. Nearby (5 mins) is the area of the largest volcanic activity on the Iberian Peninsula (1,000,000 years ago). It is well signposted and documented with notes from the local university which is still investigating the site. Further away (45 mins) is a unique area of extinct volcanoes that is similar to the French region where Volvic water comes from.
Inland the area towards the Pyrenees resembles the Tyrol. In fact much of the bottled water of Spain comes from the mountain streams and springs nearby.

Girona Town
The historic city of Girona is still encircled by its ancient medieval walls that date back to Roman times. There are numerous medieval streets and alleyways to explore plus the famous cathedral area with its cobbled streets. One of the most intriguing and evocative area is the Old Jewish quarter. Here narrow, steeply stepped byways lead through huge ancient, arched doorways to secret courtyards. To demonstrate its diverse history, as well as the Roman, Jewish and Medieval quarters, next to the imposing Christian Cathedral there is a well-preserved Moorish bathhouse.
Girona town – cosmopolitan in style has managed to retain the old look to the town and renovated the area to incorporate modern exclusive shops hidden in the expanse of cobbled lanes a real mixture of “old & new
Take the mini road train that ambles round Girona’s quaint streets.
The area is dotted with walled towns and many well-preserved castles. For archaeology buffs the extensive remains of the Roman and Greek cities of Empuria Brava are a must. It was at the remains of this ancient Greek port that the Olympic flame was brought to Spain for the Barcelona Olympics.
For a fun and cultural day visit the Salvador Dali museum at Figueras and his home, and subject of many of his paintings, at Cadaques. At this quaint fishing port you can take a superb fish lunch at the harbour-side restaurant. It is usually busy in season and you may have to beat the locals and Spanish holidaymakers to a table. In this area you will certainly hear more Catalan and Spanish than Yorkshire or Estuary English!!
