Local Area Details

Sciacca (40.000 people) one of the island's most picturesque coastal towns is a fishing port untouched by mass tourism, situated on the archaeological road between Selinunte and Agrigento in Sicily, is one of the oldest towns in the island.
With a coastline of 30 kilometres, Sciacca offers the visitor the greatest imaginable variety of marine environments: wide sandy beaches, sheer cliffs and remote tiny beaches.
Sciacca is also a very important tourist destination for its artistic ceramic works, architecture, churches and monuments.
(Very important carnival in February).
The south western part of Sicily, often referred to as African Sicily, both for the climate and the proximity to the Tunisian coast. This part of the country boasts some of the most extensive olive and grape production in Sicily, so the local oil and wine are not to be missed!
San Marco beach, is ‘Bagno-style’ which means serviced beach areas – which given the amenities they provide are fair value deck chairs, umbrellas, sunbeds and changing facilities with shower... and of course, a loo; some have little bars where they serve a snack lunch.
The beaches, only 3 miles away, have opportunities for swimming, snorkelling, sailing, windsurfing and have panoramic views of the coast for miles away. Sea water is usually on the cool side due to the channel stream on the other hand is
Biking, trekking and boat trips can be taken from the harbour and there is a good beach 3 mile out of town.

The best good sandy beach of the area is on the nearby coast " Eraclea Minoa".
Fresh fish as good wine can be purchased at the shopping centre for reasonable price (1 mile away) and few good restaurants are within a short distance also a variety of traditional shops offering hand painted local pottery

Nearest restaurants "Le Gourmet"( 400 yards), Trattoria/pizzeria "Santa Lucia"( 700 yards away).
.Throughout alleys and little squares of the port area and the town center there are many restaurants, which all serve delicious (sea-)food.

Nearest Big Supermarket (900 yards away)
fishing and tourist port (2 m.)
The beaches, only 2 or 3 miles out of town.
Fresh fish as good wine can be purchased at the shopping centre for reasonable price ( 1 m. )
Greengrocers baker’s shop and butchers for your daily needs and the local pizzeria deliver your pizza in the evening, an excellent Saturday open market is situated in side the historic walled San Michele.
The real heart of the town centre is steeped in history and ancient architecture of Moorish, and baroque style, ancient alleyways and courtyards. A labyrinth of houses and streets, some of which can be narrow enough to fit only a single person at a time.
Gelato lovers take note: The "granita" in Sciacca is widely regarded as one of the best in Italy, other sciacca desserts are cassata, cannoli with ricotta cheese and finally arancini (rice balls with ragù sauce).
Sciacca is a very safe place you can go anywhere for a good night, you will find locals warm and friendly.

In addition to the indented coastline, Sciacca has also a gentle healthy climate which makes it an ideal place for health cures thermal spa complex and public pool with hot water. The thermal Piscine, costs the princely sum of € 5 for a day.
Less than 2 miles from our country home, at the end of the road, Monte Kronio with a spectacular view of mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, and natural vapour.

Regional bus service in Sciacca provides regular connections for Palermo,Trapani and Agrigento which can be reached in under two hours, train service is very poor.
If you are considering visiting the most important sightseeing of the island, I believe that you need a car, since the famous sights and monuments are spread around the island, and the different areas each have their own unique attractions. Roads are OK. Try to avoid Catania and Palermo and you 'll find that driving around Sicily is not easy but the best way.
The privilege of being in a central coastal position means that many other parts of the island can easily be reached.

Distance from most important sightseeing:
Palermo (~90 km), the Greek temple of Segesta (~85 Km), the Greek city of Selinunte and Eraclea Minoa with superb beaches (~30 Km), Agrigento (~60 Km), Trapani(~90 Km), Erice (~95 Km), the marine natural reserve of "Lo zingaro" (~85 Km) and the white sandy beach in San Vito Lo Capo (~90 Km), the ancient Phoenician city of Mozia (on a small island) (~85 Km) Further afield are Piazza armerina (200 km) The fabulous Roman mosaics of the Villa del Casale and Mount Etna (300 km), are well worth the journey.
You can also take a short scenic drive to the nearby town of Caltabellotta (~20 km) an old village nestled in the mountains surrounding Sciacca at an altitude of 1,000 metres, the Matrice church, the Castello Mount and the Hermitage (13th century) with a stunning views over the coast and the valley for miles away.
