Local Area Details

Southwest facing and nestling between high cliffs and a lovely sandy beach dotted with brightly coloured fishing boats. The picturesque, white-washed resort stretches along the coastline encompassing Algar Seco and Centeanes beach. The main beach of Carvoeiro (pronounced Carv-ware-oh), situated near the main square is sandy, rocky on the shoreline and sheltered by cliffs in parts with good facilities. There are three other smaller cove beaches in the area which have steep access and offer more seclusion. Carvoeiro has retained its charm and is still predominantly a fishing village with a bustling, friendly atmosphere and most activity revolving around the beach and the main square. Restaurants are plentiful and offer varied dishes, "Caldeirada"(fish stew) being a delicious speciality. The resort also has numerous bars some offering live entertainment making for a lively night life centred around the main beach. There are general grocery and souvenir shops, and a daily fresh fruit and vegetable market in the resort. There is also a daily market in Lagoa which is a short drive - just under five kilometres away. At the uppermost extremity of the resort are the spectacular Algar Seco rock formations.
