Jimera de Libar is a white village set in a wide valley with mountains around. This is a small terraced townhouse in the area known as Estación, 1.5 kilometres away from the village, down beside the river. There are 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom with full bath and shower over - sleeps 4. The house is five years old. Square metres inside - 75. This is a very pretty spot south-west of Ronda, a few steps from a railway station. This is worth taking note : A stunning train journey on the Andalucia Express: Algeciras – Ronda One of Europe’s great short rail journeys, this 50-mile stretch through the Ronda mountains was built from 1890-1892 by the British so that their officers, and passengers on cruise ships bound for the east, could escape the heat of Gibraltar by heading upwards. There are four trains each way per day. Ronda is a 32 minute ride and the price is 2 Euros! It was a British engineer named Henderson who was responsible for the construction of the Ronda-Algeciras line. The train that plied this route came to be known as the Smugglers Express. It went so slowly that contraband butter, cocoa and tobacco from Gibraltar could be sold from the train windows! Also a short ride in the opposite direction is Gaucin, another really stunning 'white village' colonised to some extent by artists and writers and good for lunching out, but still essentially a Spanish backwater. There is even a tiny bar on the river bank itself. The village - Jimera de Libar - is in a valley surrounded by a nature reserve and is a great favourite with birdwatchers. Numerous walkers and birdwatdhers' websites mention how excellent the restaurant near the station is - it is a few steps from our door. There is another bar/restaurant five minutes walk away. There is even a little makeshift bar on the river bank.
Inside - tiled floors throughout. The living room has dining table, a sofa and armchairs Hi-Fi and open fireplace; beyond there is a separate fitted kitchen with gas four-ring hob and Microwave, but no conventional oven. Also so far we have no washing machine. (It will be installed before 9th Sept. 2005!) Upstairs are two bedrooms – one double, one twin – limited clothes hanging space. There is also air conditioning – in the living room only!
The back door opens from the kitchen on to the tiny rear patio - just room for the four chairs and small table. Although part of a tightly packed little development, you can still expect relative peace. Many of the houses are occupied only occasionally - they tend to be weekend boltholes for Spanish people who live in Algeciras. With this house the outdoor space is very limited - just big enough to sit and catch the sun in. There is also the communal lawn outside the front door – better to take your chair out there.
Local Area DetailsThree minutes drive away is the newly constructed municipal outdoor swimming pool in a breathtaking setting a little higher up the valley. Gaucin and Ronda (both on the train line moments from your front door) are each about thirty minutes drive. There are lots of quiet white villages around and also well-marked walks. The Griffon Vulture is one of the wildlife spectacles in the area. The coast is about one hour by car. Or take the train down to Algeciras - about 5 Euros each way(!) and catch a boat to Africa. We are not asking a high rent - we'd just like to see the place occupied!
