La Roche is an old stone farmhouse, sympathetically restored and comprehensively equipped. Peaceful and spacious, oak-beamed but bright and airy, it nestles in the beautiful southern Dordogne countryside, between the vibrant town of Bergerac and the tranquil bastide of Eymet. The house is surrounded by an acre of garden, with stunning views over the open fields beyond. The 12x6m pool has diving depth at one end, as well as a shallow end. BBQ, table tennis, swings and go-kart for small children. Linen included.
Accommodation: Double bedroom, large dining/sitting room with 2 double sofa beds, bathroom with corner bath, separate toilet, large reception area. Kitchen with new handcrafted lined oak units, hob, oven, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and washing machine.
Local Area DetailsLa Roche is situated right in the centre of what has become known as the Purple Périgord. Renowned for its wine, the landscape is striped with the vineyards of Bergerac, Pécharmant, Montbazillac and Saussignac, merging into the famous St Émilion on the western borders of the region. Ten thousand hectares of vines stretch along the meandering Dordogne, and there are many chateaux open for dégustation (wine tasting) and direct purchase.
The region also offers wonderful gastronomic delights. The many auberges and restaurants in the locality offer ample opportunities to savour the foies gras, preserved duck and goose, along with the local fish and cep or girolle mushrooms.
The region is steeped in history. The bastide towns mark the front line in the medieval wars between England and France, but there are also many pre-historic sites, including some famous cave paintings. There is a variety of chateaux and gardens to visit, such as the suspended gardens of Marqueyssac, with magnificent 360-degree views, billed as "the most beautiful panoramas of Périgord".
For those who enjoy an active holiday, you can go horse riding, boating on the Dordogne or canoeing on the Dropt. A nearby village has a basins de loisir where the whole family can spend the day enjoying watersports, and a bit further afield there are various golf courses.
