Local Area Details

The Locality, Places of Interest and Activities

Locality

Le Jardin is situated in a rural position, surrounded by farmland, on the outskirts of the tranquil village of Vezins and close to the Lac de Vezins.
Views of the Mont Saint-Michel can be seen from the Orchard.

Lac de Vezins

Auberge du Lac, a locally renowned restaurant acclaimed for its cuisine.
Base de Loisirs La Mazure aux Biards, see under activities.
Parc de Loisirs l'Ange Michel, see under activities.
Fishing, see under activities

Ducey: 7 km away is our nearest town, it is host to the Montgommery Chateau and the gardens are always a delight. A small supermarket is to be found here, as is a bank (with ATM), two dispensing Chemists, a pizzeria, a creperie, two bars, an excellent restaurant specialising (not exclusively) in seafood, butchers, tabacs and of course a plethora of boulangeries! An English speaking Doctor is also based in a surgery in Ducey
Market day is Tuesday.

St Hilaire du Harcouet: to be found 9km away. Although a lot larger than Ducey it has certainly not lost its charm. The pavement culture is much in evidence, bars are numerous and boutiques abound. Restaurants include two pizzerias, and a Cantonese as well as the customary local ones.

E.LECLERC and Champion supermarkets are here.

The market day is Wednesday and is the largest in the area.
A local vet here is well up to speed with the latest "pet scheme" requirements for those returning to the UK with pets.

Places of Interest

Avranches is a short drive away., St.James, Dinan, Fougeres, St Malo, Villedieu-les-Poeles and Rennes are all readily accessible.

Avranches has some wonderful streets for shopping, garden admirers and historians alike. The Jardin des Plantes, the Notre-Dame-des-Champs, the Mont Saint-Michel scrolls are displayed here in the Summer in the splendid library of the Ancient Fund of Avranches. St. James is home to the American World War II cemetery. Dinan, with its imposing castle and medieval buildings housing shops, cafes and restaurants in winding narrow cobbled streets, leading down to the quaint harbour. Whilst in the area St.Malo is well worth a visit too, steeped in history and surrounded by wonderful sandy beaches. Just around the headland is Cancale, renowned for its seafood. Fougeres is another extremely interesting medieval town, well worth a visit, and nearby is the Parc Floral de Haute Bretagne for the gardeners!

Villedieu-les-Poeles, renowned for its copper workshops and museums. It is also home to the Zoo de Champrepus, with an excellent pets corner to keep the children amused.
Rennes is a large cosmopolitan city, so if the shopaholics are having withdrawal symptoms.... however there is more to Rennes than just shops, the old part is medieval and worth a visit if in town.

Mont Saint-Michel: delightful at any time, enchanting at night. The reason why it is the second most visited site in France is obvious to see.

Slightly further afield but easily managed in one day:

The Normandy beaches, Arromances and the Bayeux Tapestry

Activities

Base de Loisirs La Mazure aux Biards, a leisure and water sports activity centre. Sailing, wind surfing, canoeing, and on land: tennis, petanque, and archery to name a few.
Parc de Loisirs l'Ange Michel, around 30 activities including: aquasplash, quadbiking, childrens' amusement park, and bumper boats.

Fishing, coarse fishing is well catered for locally. A day ticket is available but a 2 week holiday permit for 30 Euros is better value, the permits are available from Ducey and St. Hilaire-du-Harcouet and are easy to obtain.

On the Lac de Vezins, Pike, Zander and Perch are the target of local fishermen, mainly because they eat them. However other fish such as Carp, Bream and Roach are possible.

From the Lac de Vezins towards the Barrage de Roche qui Bois is classed as a category 2 river and big Bream and Chubb are possible. Upstream of the barrage, through Ducey and towards the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel the river Selune is a category 1 river and is fly-fished for Salmon and Sea Trout

Cycling, for the active, discover Manche on a cycle. The Bay of Mont Saint-Michel has 12 veloroutes, of differing degrees of difficulty. For example we are actually situated on the "Circuit des lacs", a mere 22kms!

Degustation, Normandy is renowned for it's cheese and Cider. Local "farm" allow tasting of locally produced cheeses and cider based products. Whilst Calvados may be an acquired taste the fortified cider, Pommeau makes a lovely liquer and the Cidre Bouche (slightly sparkling) makes a refreshing lunchtime drink.

Son et Luminiere, during the summer months on Saturday night a spectacular sound and light show is held: " Les Feriques de Montgothier".

Walks, we are fortunate in having some lovely walks around us: the woods near Ducey, (hopefully you'll spot a red squirrel or two), the waterfalls at Mortain or the disused railway from St.Hilaire-du-Harcouet to Ducey (hopefully to be soon extended to Mont Saint-Michel) which has been converted into a greenway.

Horseriding, horse trekking in the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel.
