Villa in Baja, Mexico

Property Details

Sandy beaches, snorkeling and frozen Margaritas are what often come to mind when pondering a trip to Mexico. But Mexico has a best-kept secret. Savvy travelers who have bucked the beaches and Spring Break crowds have discovered the vast, richly cultured interior of this extraordinary country---where its uncharted facets reveal a relaxed and culturally unique way of life.

It is here in the desert highlands where centuries of silver mining created wealth and culture, and where Mexican history, art and religion collide for a textured and exciting spot to relax, recharge and learn---as well as enjoy delicious frozen Margaritas.

San Miguel de Allende, the crown jewel of central Mexico, set in the desert highlands north of Mexico City, is a designated national monument: a historic cobblestoned Colonial village set on a hill that will charm your senses.

It was here in this magical place that artists from all over the globe have gathered since the mid-20th century, centralized around the Instituto Allende, the international art academy that helped transform this region and inspired a unique bohemian lifestyle in the spirit of Provincetown, Big Sur or Santa Fe.

Casa Schuck is one of many places to stay in San Miguel; but our spacious 19th century Colonial villa is just a few blocks off of the town square, in the middle of this lively town’s action. Our six boutique guest rooms offer a unique luxury lodging experience in one of San Miguel’s grandest Colonial homes, the Schuck House, which was restored in the late 1960s by American expatriates Gladys and Charles Schuck of Westport, Connecticut.

The Schucks, who arrived in San Miguel in 1957, were among the pioneers who invested in the building of schools, libraries and programs aimed at educational enrichment of the area’s children. Their home, now owned by Nancy, their daughter (and run by Susan, their granddaughter) is known for its grand guest rooms and gardens, as well as its Old World charm and unique Colonial character.

American travel writer Mary Trakso in Audrey Magazine wrote of Casa Schuck: "it’s as if you are a treasured guest in someone’s lovely Mexican hacienda."

Our home---or Abadiá, meaning (what is abadia?)---is a walled compound on the hillside overlooking the city. Inside our doorway you are first greeted with a central courtyard and portico colonnade, and the sound of birds in the trees. Just up the steps is a garden, swimming pool, and the 1,500 square foot roof top sun deck that opens to sweeping views of the valley, downtown San Miguel and the mountain range in the distance.

All guest rooms face our central courtyard---and our lush Jacaranda tree that shades the swimming pool and patio. All guest rooms have high beamed ceilings, dramatic French doors, and working fireplaces. Some rooms have private sun decks and balconies. All are quiet and comfortable and have king-sized bedrooms with purified water.

Bathrooms are stocked with soaps, lotions, and shampoos, and our closets have plush terrycloth robes and house slippers. Each morning a full breakfast is served in the main dining room, where guests exchange shopping tips, travel highlights, and often make new friends. Just steps out of our front door is a world of antique shops, art galleries, and some of the best Mexican food you’ll ever taste.

Our staff is discreet and attentive, leaving Casa Schuck guests only the chore of deciding how to spend the day. We offer internet and fax services, as well as cable television in the Sala---or card room---that keeps you in touch with world news. San Miguel is only a one-hour drive from Bajio de Leon International Airport, where daily flights from NYC, LA, Seattle, Chicago and San Francisco arrive. It makes San Miguel---and Casa Schuck---the perfect spot to hang your hat while you wander the uncharted desert wonderland of central Mexico. We look forward to your stay.

Local Area Details

San Miguel de Allende was founded by Fray Juan de San Miguel over 450 years ago. San Miguel de Allende besides enjoying one of the best climates in the world, is a bright, seducing and fascinating city; full of cultural riches. In only a brief stroll through the historic downtown area one comes to see that this Mexican national treasure is a marvel of architectural preservation. The historic zone, which includes stunning examples of Colonial 19th century buildings, brings visitors back to another time in history.

The crown jewel in San Miguel’s architectural crown is the Parroquia, a spired medieval landmark that can be seen from miles outside of the city. Outside of this church on any given day you will find a flurry of activity and celebration. Located across the plaza from the town Jardín, where locals gather each morning to exchange the news of the day, the Parroquia will stay in your mind as one of the more eye-catching churches in the world.

San Miguel's marvels don't stop there, San Miguel also offers it's visitors an endless amount of galleries, handicraft stores, art schools, museums, etc. Part of the most typical handicrafts here in San Miguel are blown glass, wrought iron, tin, silver, leather articles, and more.
