Local Area DetailsKalkan .............is a small, yet sophisticated peaceful resort on the magnificent Turquoise coast. A historic fishing village, it combines Greek architecture, warm Turkish hospitality, and a wide variety of attractions to suit the discerning tourist. The old town of Kalkan is a myriad of diverse shops and restaurants set amid narrow cobbled streets and alleyways, which descend down to the picturesque harbour. Tranquil by day, this old town comes alive at dusk as the roof top bars and restaurants offer not only a fabulous array of local and Mediterranean culinary delights, but give the diner, superb views of the town, the sea and the stars. Shop till midnight, or stop by for a drink at one of the few bars where Jazz, Blues or piano music fill the air. It’s no surprise that guests to Kalkan keep returning each year to this wonderful place in the sun.
For those with time to browse, Kalkan shops offer a feast of delights with no “Hassle. Exquisite gold and silver jewellery, both contemporary and antique and personally fitted to suit: ...superbly finished hand-painted ceramics: .........stylish fashions and local tailors making suits and shirts to measure...and don’t miss Thursday’s local market. Further afield, the busy market town of Fethiye has a wider selection of shops and restaurants, and neighbouring Kas also has a good selection of unusual shops in the quaint back streets, close to the harbour.
There’s plenty to do in and around Kalkan. For a water sports enthusiast, there’s snorkeling in the clear blue waters, or scuba diving at one of the best dive centres on this coastline. From the many “beach clubs, try water-skiing; hire a jet ski, or just a pedalo. Take to the sky parascending or try to stay firmly on the water - on a banana, or a ringo. Alternatively, have a boat trip and visit “Snake or “Mouse - the two islands out in the bay, or stop off in one of the quiet bays. Although Kalkan beach is small and pebbled, a few minutes in a taxi or dolmus, takes you to Kaputas - a breathtaking sandy beach at the foot of a steep ravine. For 18 kilometres of unspoilt sands, Patara beach is both stunning and interesting.
Set in the heart of Lycia, Kalkan is well placed to enable you to visit ancient ruins set in wonderful surroundings. Xanthos, Letoon and Patara are on the doorstep and day trips to Kekova - the famous sunken city: ...Pinara - set high up in the mountains...Tlos - the home of Pegasus: and the rock tombs of Myra are all worth a visit.
As well as ancient ruins, the Taurus mountains are great for walkers to enjoy the rich fauna, or hire a car and visit the traditional Turkish villages where life remains unchanged and enjoy the warmth of these friendly people who live with traditions rooted in the past. Beyond the raging waters in Saklikent, you can walk the winding gorge upstream or canoe in the calmer lower river.
Your visit to Turkey would not be complete without a relaxing “Gulet cruise - a skippered traditional wooden yacht enables you to sunbathe on sun beds whilst gently sailing around the coast and stopping off in secluded bays for swimming, snorkelling or fishing from the boat. A tasty lunch is provided along with Turkish afternoon tea. Another option is to hire your own boat for about £50 - not a bad price for a day’s trip for 4/5 persons inc. lunch.
Don’t forget a trip to the local barber for a haircut or shave or indulge in a manicure/pedicure at very reasonable rates. An authentic Turkish bath (Hamam) is a truly memorable experience not to be missed.
