The White House Spain
House in Catalonia, Spain
Property Details
The White House, built in 1843, is in a narrow street in Rasquera, a typical Catalan farming village, 150 kilometres south of Barcelona, in the foothills of the Sierra de Cardó, two kilometres from the River Ebro and 30 kms inland from Tortosa.
The house has been renovated to provide, on the first floor, a large kitchen/dining-room, a single bedroom and a bathroom. There is an oven/hob, fridge, washing-machine, iron and ironing-board in the kitchen.
On the second floor are the lounge ( with a double sofa bed,) the double bedroom and another single bedroom.
The roof has been removed to provide a sun terrace, which covers the whole house.
There is a separate ground floor apartment, with a kitchen, bed sitting room ( with double sofa bed ) and a bathroom, but this is not always available.
Although the house has been fully renovated and contains modern amenities, it should be appreciated that this is not a modern hotel or beachside apartment. It is a place for those seeking the tranquility of an authentic village and the beauty of the surrounding countryside.
Local Area DetailsRasquera is an old Catalan farming villages, situated in the hills 150 metres above the River Ebro, 25 kilometres inland from the unspoilt Costa Daurada.
It is three hours drive from Barcelona, but only 60 kms from Reus Airport.
Thr Old Quarter, where the house is situated, is a maze of narrow streets, alleys, stone steps and arches.
There are a few shops, a bank, a pharmacy, three bars, a restaurant and two cafe/patisseries. There is a fine fully-supervised public swimming-pool ( open July & August only.)
There are major festivals in May and August.
Spain's longest river, the Ebro, cuts through the nearby mountains, producing spectacular scenery, especially at Miravet with its cliff-top Templar castle ( 4 kms by ferry.) It is also noted for fishing, especially for catfish. The Ebro Delta ( 30 kms ) is one of Spain's leading bird-watching areas, while eagles and kites inhabit the inland sierras.
The coastal towns of the southern Costa Daurada are largely undeveloped, with fine beaches aand good restaurants at l'Ampolla, l'Ametlla de Mar, Sant Carles de la Rapita and l'Hospitalet del'Infant ( all about 30 kms.)
Tortosa ( 30 kms ) boasts excellent shopping and a fine cathedral while, further afield, Tarragona is noted for its historic buildings and some of Spain's finest Roman remains.
