Les Canardeaux dates from the 18th century and retains its old-world charm, seamlessly combined with essential modern comforts.

In the spacious open plan living area with exposed oak beams, the wood burning fire is a cheering focal point in winter and the thick stone walls ensure a cool respite from the heat of summer. There is a comfortable leather settee and three armchairs to relax in, possibly whilst watching a DVD or playing one of the games provided.

New for 2005 - English TV programmes via satellite (BBC and ITV).

The kitchen is designed to make cooking a pleasure with a lightening fast halogen and induction hob, electric oven, microwave, electric steamer and even a raclette grill (very popular here around Halloween). There are masses of cupboards, an excellent range of utensils, dishwasher, fridge freezer, washing machine and tumble drier. The dining area is furnished with a solid oak table and chairs.

Les Canardeaux sleeps up to six people in two double and two single bedrooms. A corridor leads to the downstairs bedrooms, one of which has a double pine bed and matching bedside tables with bedside lights, an antique pine farinier and mirror. A farinier was a cupboard used in the nineteenth century to store ingredients used in bread making. Ours has a set of deep drawers down the side that would have held provisions such as salt, flour and yeast but now tends to be used for underwear! The French windows overlook the terrace allowing you to enjoy the stunning sunrises and sunsets we frequently experience. The single bedroom has pale blue panelled walls, a pine bed, beside table and a wardrobe with full-length mirror.

Upstairs there is a large double room with an iron bed, white bedside tables, lamps, an antique pine wardrobe with carved roses, chest of drawers and a freestanding mirror. The second upstairs bedroom contains a single white stained pine bed, a white bedside table and chest of drawers, a mirror and an antique wardrobe known as an ‘homme debout’, or standing man, because it would have served as a hiding place for Royalists during the French Revolution.

All the bedrooms have electric heaters and are provided with protective mattress covers, pillows, duvets, blankets and top quality bed linen. A cot and high chair will be provided on request. All towels are supplied - bath, hand and separate ones for the pool. We also leave you tea towels, washing up liquid, washing powder, dishwasher tablets, hot water bottles, sewing kit, first aid kit and shoe polish. The welcome pack includes emergency supplies to help you unwind such as 2 bottles of wine, fresh bread, milk, tea, coffee and biscuits, all at no extra charge.

The bonheur du jour desk on the landing contains lots of brochures and our own notes about things to do to complement you stay in this lovely region. The bathroom has a corner bath with shower, huge basin, generous storage space and an electric heater to hang the towels on. There are 2 separate toilets (one on each floor).

The garden is sheltered by trees and looks out over open farmland. The terrace, which is like an extra room in summer, is covered to offer shade, has a huge fixed table and 6 chairs, and is conveniently situated overlooking the private swimming pool. The pool itself has extensive terracing and loungers for sun worshippers. There is also a permanent barbeque, boules pitch and wide grassy area.

Local Area Details

Les Canardeaux is situated between rolling farmland and extensive woodland in a hitherto little-known region called the Berry. The Foret de Bommiers is on the doorstep and can be explored on foot or by bicycle.

George Sand, the French writer and companion of Chopin, adored this countryside and her house at Nohant is open to visitors.

There are three golf courses within 40 minutes of the house. The nearest is about 15 minutes’ drive away at Sainte Fauste. There is another at Les Dryades hotel complex in Pouligny Notre Dame and the third is at Villedieu sur Indre.

The vineyards of Chateaumeillant, Reuilly/Quincy and Valencay are within easy reach.

Nearby are the chateaux of Ars, Lys-Saint Georges and Sarzay - enchanting fairy tale castles nestling in the forests.

Simple, inexpensive meals are available in Bommiers, Maron, Vouillon and Ambrault, and there is an exceptionally good restaurant at Sassierges St Germain. All villages are just a few minutes' drive from the house.

There is a renowned market every Tuesday morning at St Aout, 9 kilometres away, where you can also purchase fishing permits in the local cafe and go horse riding.

A baker's van calls 3 times a week, and there is a baker and grocer 3 minutes' drive away in the village of Ambrault. Banks can be found in St Aout and Ardentes where there is also a supermarket, and close by on the outskirts of Chateauroux is a huge Auchan hypermarket.

About Golfing

It takes fifteen minutes to reach the nearest golf course, the golf Club des Sarrays at Sainte Fauste. A small and friendly nine-hole course, it is 2,570m, par 72. The other two are both eighteen-hole courses. One is to the south east, within Les Dryades hotel complex in Pouligny Notre Dame (6,120m, par 72) and the other is the Golf du Val de l’Indre at the chateau of Villedieu to the west of Les Canardeaux (6,225m, par 72). These two are about equidistant from the cottage, around a half hour’s drive away.
