Local Area DetailsThis historic seaside resort stands at the mouth of the River Esk, surrounded by rolling moors, a large sandy beach on one side and rocky seashore on the other, full of marine life and fossils. Whitby has strong associations with Captain James Cook, who learned his seamanship in Whitby between voyages, including on the Endeavour, which has enjoyed several sucessful visits to the port.
The town is divided by a swing bridge. On the West side is a modern seaside resort and on the East side is 'Old Whitby', where you find the famous Whitby Abbey Synod Ruins and a curious and interesting parish church, These are reached by the famous 199 steps from a maze of old streets and alleyways. Whitby also has historic associations with Bram Stoker's Count Dracula, who, as legend says, came ashore in Whitby, lived there and is buried there.
Whitby has a large harbour, which contains its local fishing fleet, a yachting marina, and a wharf for commercial shipping. At any time the harbour is full of activity and interest.
Whitby's amenities include; fishing, sailing, floral pavilion, mini golf, bowling, golf, tennis courts, indoor heated swimming pool, boating, museums, art galleries - in short there is something for everyone!
