Kintra is an old fishing and crofting community in a peaceful sheltered bay on the northwest tip of the Ross of Mull. It overlooks the sound of Iona and is, at low tide, a mass of rock pools and the haunt of small crabs, sea urchins, sea anemones and shellfish. It affords a safe anchorage for those who wish to bring a boat and is ideal for canoeists, with sheltered rocky islets on the Mull side of the Sound of Iona. Oystercatchers and gulls nest round the bay with herons on an island just off the coast.

The Long House commands a central position in the village, above the sea wall and 10 yards from the high tide mark. Of the two original croft houses, one provides a comfortable living area and a well-equipped kitchen and the other contains a bathroom, a double bedded room and a family room.


This is an ideal holiday house for families or for two couples with up to two children.

You can take boat trips to Iona, Staffa (Fingal's cave) and the Treshnish Isles can be made or you can fish, bathe, walk, tour, take in the wonderful views, watch the sunset or simply laze about.

There is a rich variety of plant, bird and sea life. Over 50 different birds number in our visitors' book including eagles, guillemots, eider duck, buzzards, warblers, owls, pipits, swallows, sandmartins, corncrakes, sparrow hawks and herons. Red deer, mountain hares, rabbits and, unfortunately, mink are abundant and, in the spring, the wild flowers in the bogs, On the coast and in the mountains and woods can defy description.

Endless exploration of the coast, creeks, crags, and moorland is possible. There are walks up mountains ­ Ben More is traditionally the last Munro to be climbed ­ and to beaches, caves and deserted villages including Carsaig Arches, the Fossil Tree on Burg. Crakaig Township with its old illicit whisky still, and Mackinnon¹s cave.

On Iona you will find St. Columba's Abbey on the site of a monastery founded here in 563 AD. The Abbey, the resting place of many of the Kings of Scotland, is a place of Christian pilgrimage as witnessed by the standing stones that mark the route to Iona across Mull.

On Mull, Duart Castle, Torosay House and gardens, The Mull Railway, Tobermory (where Spanish galleons were shipwrecked), Aros Park, the Old Byre Heritage Centre, St. Columba's Centre, and The Mull Little Theatre are all well worth a visit along with the Mull Pottery and Silversmiths and other craft workshops.
