The Bake House was originally the bakery in Clun, which was still functioning just ten years ago. Having fallen into disuse, it has been carefully converted and renovated into a lovely red-brick and stone cottage. The cottage stands on one of the main walking paths of Shropshire, the Shropshire Way, which leads you past the ancient Clun castle into the Shropshire hills and on to Offa's Dyke path, with wonderful views across the high upland pastures.

Clun hasn't changed much since A E Housman penned his description of it as 'the quietest place under the sun'. But if you want a more lively atmosphere in contrast, the bustling towns of Shrewsbury and historic Ludlow are a short drive away.

Local Area Details

The Bake House accommodation comprises:
• Cosy lounge with solid fuel burner (Stanley).
• Mezzanine dining room
• Well-equipped kitchen, with washing machine, fridge and Rayburn. The Rayburn provides the hot water, cooking and drives the central heating. There is also an electric stove, radiators and hot water immersion heater.
• Main bedroom, with double bed and views form front directly overlooking Clun castle and from the back over the Shropshire hills. French doors open onto a balcony at the side, catching the sun through the morning.
• Second bedroom, also overlooking the castle and with a double bed.
• Bathroom and loft complete the accommodation.
• There is a small but pretty rear garden.

Clun is the most famous of the villages situated along the beautiful Clun valley. Although the best known, it still retains its ancient charm and peaceful atmosphere. The livelier market town of Bishops Castle lies six miles to the north. This area of South Shropshire provides an abundance of good food at reasonable prices as well as a couple of breweries and Clun, itself, offers inexpensive food and drink at its three pubs and other cafes. We can recommend some of our favourite eating places if you care to ask.


The walks from Clun start on the doorstep of the Bake House and extend in all directions across the hills and steep valleys of the border countryside. A short drive takes you into the Welsh towns of Newtown and Knighton. Clun is a wonderful location, not just for walking, but for cycling, motorcycling, hang-gliding, paragliding and conventional gliding and horse riding. Spectacular views from ancient sites such as the Long Mynd, the Stiperstones and the nearby Bury Ditches ensure that every day is one of discovery.
