A Cottage for two in Calvados France
Cottage in Normandy, France
Property Details
Cleanliness, comfort and attention to detail are all important to us in this small granite cottage. Professionally restored to a high standard, it offers you a well-equipped kitchen/living room with a traditional Normandy fireplace, beamed ceiling, real terracotta floor, rugs, fridge, electric rings and oven and comfortable furnishings. A wood-burning stove and access to a free supply of logs ensures it’s welcoming whatever the season. Best of all, you’ll feel that it’s like a home rather than a stark gite. UK Television , a video player, a radio that picks up Radio 4 and more, and a stock of good recent paperbacks and videos will all provide you with relaxing accompaniments to yet another glass of wine.
Up the open-tread wooden staircase you’ll find a small, prettily decorated double-bedded room with rose-coloured Toile de Jouey curtains and bed-linen and attractive ornaments and artefacts. The spacious en-suite shower/dressing room has a well-lit marble-topped vanity unit, and toilet.

Local Area DetailsThe cottage is situated in a hamlet of cottages poised on the southwest border of the Departments of Calvados and Manche. There are two villages each just over a mile away with a General Store, bar and a baker. Both villages feature on the Normandy Granite trail. We have our farmhouse that dates from 1724 and the cottage. Both are quietly situated among lanes and fields, with a well-tended garden to relax in and enclosed parking. In 1944 all the houses in the hamlet were briefly occupied by German soldiers one morning in August and the Americans the same afternoon! General Patton’s troops were pressing through from Avranches to Mortain. A stone’s throw away from us is a tiny chapel - and a spring dedicated to St Claire that is said to cure eye complaints.
The Cane ferry terminal is little more than an hour away, St Malo and Cherbourg are both about a half hour further and from Euro tunnel it’s about four hours by an excellent auto route.
Whilst you are here we do our best to be as helpful and informative as you want or else as unobtrusive as you wish. We can offer help and advice to anyone seeking property themselves.
Vire, about 9 miles to the north-wet is a bustling town with a reputation for wonderful food. It has a two weekly markets, supermarkets and a mouth-watering selection of specialist food shops and restaurants. It has a new leisure centre and swimming pool with outdoor flumes. Picturesque Villedieu-les-Poeles also not far away is still famous for producing wonderful copperware in its high-street workshops – you’ll find examples in the cottage. There’s a great market there on Tuesdays, a bell-foundry, museums and a maze of lovely little alleys and courts. It’s a town that captivates everyone and like Bayeux was spared destruction by the Allies in 1944.
Walk, fish, windsurf or hire a pedalo on beautiful Lake Dathee about 5 miles away, play golf on the adjoining course, wander on the marked trails in the Dominiale Forest of St Sever, visit the nearby Granite Museum, accept invitations to taste cider, Calvados, cheese – or decide which great-value restaurant to visit next. Mont St Michel, Bayeux for the Tapestry and Cathedral, the coast with its long fine sandy beaches, WW11 sites, as well as many other places of interest and beauty are all within easy reach. You can also be in Brittany in a short while.
