Cottage in Meath, Ireland

Property Details

Once inside the house one is immediately struck by the warm, homely atmosphere that pervades. The lodge has the feeling of being lived in and everybody would automatically feel at home in the comfortable, yet traditional interior. Adjoining the hallway is the large kitchen/dining area. One of the most striking things about this room is the tiling that has been used. The enormous yellow and red tiles are over one hundred years old and were rescued from a salvage yard after their potential for the lodge was realised. These, along with the antique kitchen table, give the room a genuine sense of rustic charm. The kitchen area is equipped with massive worktops to facilitate food preparation, as well as an enormous Belfast sink saved from the original house. On top of this are to be found all the modern conveniences one would expect, like a dishwasher, microwave and large fridge with freezer. Also on this level is the large sitting room. This wooden-floored room is big enough to accommodate a large number of guests, yet the traditional open-fireplace ensures it retains its cozy atmosphere. As well as this, the rugs, sumptuous sofas and soft lighting lend the room an air of elegant luxury. The wooden french doors on the south side of the room ensure plenty of natural light right throughout the year. These doors open onto the large garden patio, equipped with its own barbecue and garden furniture for those long summer evenings.
There are two rooms to the upstairs of the house, a bedroom and a large bathroom. This upstairs bedroom is one of the most interesting features of the house. It takes the form of a spacious, self-contained wooden loft. The velux windows on this level offer perhaps the most spectacular views from anywhere in the house. On a clear day one can see mile upon mile of unspoilt countryside. The bathroom is fitted with long, deep bath, perfect for unwinding at the end of the day.The house has its own private car parking and tennis facilities are available on request. Other features worth mentioning include: oil central heating, colour TV and VCR, washing machine and dryer, fire and security alarms, and the fact that all organic paints and wood treatments were used throughout.

Local Area Details

The house is also ideally located as a base to explore other popular tourist destinations in Meath. The world famous Neolithic site of Newgrange is only a short drive away, as is the Hill of Tara, said to be the meeting place of the Irish high-kings. Also close by is the Tower of Lloyd (built during the famine to provide employment and now home to a public park) and St. Ciaran's well, an unspoilt site of local pilgrimage.

The Tomb at Newgrange was built about 3200 BC. The kidney shaped mound covers an area of over one acre and is surrounded by 97 kerbstones, some of which are richly decorated with megalithic art. The 19 metre long inner passage leads to a cruciform chamber with a corbelled roof. It is estimated that the construction of the Passage Tomb at Newgrange would have taken a work force of 300 at least 20 years.
Loughcrew House
Local attractions include Loughcrew House, gardens and nearby cairns, unspoilt passage graves about 8 or 9 miles from the lodge. Loughcrew is rich in historical, archaeological, religious and natural interest. One of ancient Ireland's major roads passes through Loughcrew, crossing the great Road of the Chariots nearby. The lakes abound with cranógs and the drumlins are topped with innumerable motte and bailey forts. The Loughcrew Cairns (prehistoric passage graves), some 5,000 years old, are perhaps the oldest calendar known, and may even be the world's oldest existing dwellings.
