About History

The Town is rich with New England History first as a ship building port. Then it became a manufacturing hub, specializing in Shoe making. This began to wither and By the 1970's was all but a memory. At that time LL BEAN had gained momentum under leadership of Leon Gorman, LL's grandson. By the 1980's Freeport had developed into a shopping destination and with LL Bean leading the way had become a model for outlet shops to come.
