Local Area DetailsSALMON FISHING ON THE BLACKWATER
The Cork Blackwater is Ireland’s finest Salmon River and one of the most important salmon rivers in Europe, stretching for over 150 kilometres from its source in Kerry to the sea at Youghal. The season for salmon opens on 1st February and continues until 30th September. Due to the size of its catchment area the Blackwater maintains a good flow so that fishing is possible in a wide range of weather conditions.
The Blackwater is almost entirely privately owned and we are fortunate to be able to offer some of the best beats on the river, spread over a 40 kilometre stretch from Killavullen and Ballyhooly down to Ballyduff.
The woodlands surrounding Ballyvolane provide ever changing and breathtaking scenes throughout the year. Just east of the north side of the house lies the rock, a small knoll, densely planted with native timbers reaching skywards for light, while at their base a path weaves through a carpet of bluebells in early June.
The ornamental lakes which adorn the parkland below the front of the house were originally dug by hand during the 19th century and were recently restored, deepened and landscaped to accommodate trout for fishing. Until the mid 1990's they had been hidden by dense undergrowth and submerged in silt. Though restoration is complete, replanting and regeneration is ongoing.
Ballyvolane plays host to a wide variety of wildlife both native and domestic. Some of our native species, such as the red squirrel, can sometimes be a little elusive but patience is well rewarded. Ballyvolane is still a working farm too and the cattle that graze the surrounding pastures are kept good company by a small herd of donkeys. Archie, the largest cat in Munster, also lives at Ballyvolane and keeps the flock of fantail pigeons on their toes! The ageing spaniel and the terriers are always bubbling with excitement, welcoming guests and begging to be taken for walks.

Kilcor cottage is a recently restored comfortably furnished traditional cottage and is available on a self-catering basis. Full of old-world country charm and with panoramic views overlooking the Bride valley, extending from the Galtee to the Knockmealdown mountains.
