Local Area DetailsFanore sits on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean about 4 miles west of Ballyvaughan and 4 miles south of Black Head, the most northerly point of County Clare. It is famous for its golden sandy beach and weathered limestone plateaus sloping down to the Atlantic coastline. Fanore also boasts a famous fulacha fiadh (cooking or sauna site) dating back to the Bronze Age. Fanore is widely recognised as one of the finest amenity areas in the Burren.
The Ballyreen area of Fanore is a paradise for divers, with visibility of 25 meters. The clear unpolluted waters along the coast are a haven for shore angling. A world championship Rock Angling Festival is held in Fanore in June each year. The automated lighthouse at Black Head (left) 4km from Fanore, Fan Oir in Irish which translates as "golden slope of beach". The green roads, which cut along the side of the hills, follow tracks that have been in continual use since very early times while others were built as relief projects during the dark day of the Famine. They offer the hill walker a wonderful chance to ramble in splendid isolation through the Burren. The Burren is a unique limestone area in Europe where you can see plants from such diverse areas as the warm Mediterranean, cold arctic and high Alps grow in harmony. In the 161km2 area there are sparkling rivers, brooking castles, towering cliffs, lush green valleys, Burren rock mountains and everywhere relics of ancient civilisation. Travel through the Burren and see 7,000 years of history unfold before your eyes.
